Orphan Care and School Assistance

According to the statistical data of the Ministry of Civil Affairs, there are over 900,000 orphans in China. They are the weakest and most disadvantaged group in the society. Over a long period of time, they not only face severe financial difficulty but also suffer tremendous psychological pressure. The state started to provide special subsidies to orphans from 2010 to resolve the issue of the orphans' subsistence. However, the attention paid to their incomplete family and psychological trauma is still insufficient. They are still confronted with big problems in their growth, employment and social inclusion. Such a situation can easily result in the lack of confidence in and hope about their life and future. This not only brings disadvantages to their healthy growth but also leave many risks to their future when they become a member of the society.

In order to help the impoverished orphans in the Tomorrow School in Nanjing resolve the issue of the funds for their daily study and life, the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation established the "Orphan Care and Schooling Assistance Program at the Tomorrow School in Nanning". In 2011, the program became one of the recommended programs in the Dream Choir, a large public interest and charity television program produced by China Central Television. As a sole provider of the public interest and charity funds, the China Merchants Securities provided RMB 200,000 yuan to the program to provide 50 orphans with one year intuition and living expenses.

The Tomorrow School in Nanning is the first orphan school in Guangxi. It opened on August 28th, 2000. Now there are over 700 students in 20 teaching classes. There are also 40 teachers and staff members in the school. In the future, the school will start to enroll orphans from old revolutionary base areas and poverty-stricken regions year by year. The goals in student cultivation of the school include educating orphans so that they can learn how to study, how to live their life, how to associate with people and how to become a member of the society and master one or two skills to make a living.
